Rutledge's Fastest Four Year Old; Morbecks Drift to 3rd Place!
......At 1 PM we all proceeded down to the Triangle for the Big Games. The little boys were getting "as cross as two sticks" (to quote my mother) so Sally whisked them back home to the comfort of their beds.
My Mother
......Brad carefully watched the various footraces which pitted older kids vs.older kids as he waited patiently for the Big Enchilada of Races, the Most Thrilling 10 Seconds in All of Sports, the hallowed "15 yard Dash for 4 year olds."
......13 children lined up at the edge of the blacktop, their hopes and dreams of future years riding on every stride. Brad drew a post position on the far Southwesterly side, the sun comfortably behind him in the afternoon sky. The string of pennants signifying the finish line were stretched tantalizingly tightly a mere 45 feet away.
"On your Mark...........Get Set............GO!"
......The sound of the man shouting "GO" must have taken a long time to reach him, being near the far end. Either that, or a bunch of other kids started early. Regardless, the rest of the pack started to advance quickly while Brad lingered tortoise-like back near the starting line.
......Suddenly, in a tremendous burst of acceleration, it was as if the after burners had turned on. Like a winning thoroughbred coming down the stretch Brad caught up and passed all of his competitors in a blaze of super speed.
VICTORY!
......Coincidentally Gold "Sacajawea" dollars were being given out as prizes. Brad’s friend Evan Lacon was proven to be Rutledge’s Fastest Six Year Old, a big day for our block of President Avenue.
