POSING AS INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE DISJOINTED "CONCEPT FLOAT" BORDERING
NATIONAL LANDMARK MT. RUSHMORE DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO INSANITY
Well, our hearts were (are) in the right place. Someday maybe we'll construct a float whose concepts aren't quite so obtuse. If you look closely at the Martin's float that's Ole' Honest Abe on the right. The kids were girls, they were cute, they're younger than our guys and we didn't really mind losing to this bunch. Here's a brief (!) description of the Morbeck Family entry in the "Family Float Division" of the Rutledge 2003 Independence Day Parade
According to Native American Legend , the Earth sits on the back of a giant turtle.
What does that turtle sit upon, you might ask?
Another turtle! (and so on and so on...........)
Due to budgetary constraints we only had the funds available to construct ONE gigantic paper mache' reptile, so one must imagine the infinite stack below We've carefully positioned a remarkably accurate plywood map of Rutledge (Delaware County's SMALLEST municipality) on the turtle's back, implying that Rutledge is the extent of Civilized Man's known geographic realm. Hopelessly out of scale buildings dot the landscape, denoting Rutledge hotspots our family knows and loves. An ingenious transport system allows Brad's globe (a gift from Santa last year) to revolve a full 360 degrees in orbit around our town, turning that old fuddy duddy guy Copernicus's Theory on its ear. Celestial bodies on circling bicycles hover about the entire tableau, while old Mr. Copernicus himself marches along side. Rutledge itself is divided into two parts (UPPER and LOWER), a point which obviously failed to impress the judges (and everyone else).
